I'm not the original author of this thread buy I've read it, and Von Hayek's "Road to Serfdom", and I'm still more inclined to agree with the original poster's (admittedly over simplified) analysis. Suggest you read Marx's "Capital"

Hey there,
It's not hard to see the many and varied problems that we face in our daily lives, but finding out the root causes and possible solutions can be a much harder task given the nature of our education and media system. To complicate matters, there are huge numbers of parties calling themselves 'socialist', and each has its own particular take on the matter. Best try and dive in to a few sites and check out some FAQs; e.g. http://www.worldsocialism.org/articles/faq.php
Basically, capitalism is about production for profit in a system where a small minority own and control the earth's resources. The majority of us do not, and are thus obliged to work for the minority.
There are a couple of fundamental features to note -
i. 'Can't pay? Can't have!' This applies as much to food and drink and clothing as it does to a Mercedes Benz, or having a team in the Premier League.
ii. 'No profit? No production!' In other words, like in the present economic crisis, if the capitalist class feels it can't make a profit then it will withhold resources and production 'til such time as it feels it can. In the meantime, people 'lose' their jobs, despite being able and willing to work; goods aren't made or services provided despite there being a need for them, etc.
By contrast, socialism is about genuine worldwide common ownership, where the earth's resources are freely available without distintion of class or nationality etc. Where prodution is solely to meet peoples' needs, in a sustainable relationship with our environment. That sort of thing!
