re:

I think the author was referencing the term "Liberte, egalite, fraternite" which has represented the struggle for freedom from oppression since the French Revolution.

Despite the never ending discussion about whether or not the three terms are compatible or mutually exclusive I think the phrase has come to mean more than the sum of its parts.

re:

Good point, I hadn't considered that. Fraternity isn't necessarily exclusively male, but admittedly brotherhood tends to be. I was thinking it can be used as a neutral term, like 'he' can be used when in doubt about a person? Hmm...

re:

it seems odd to use the word equality, and then relate it to fraternity and brotherhood. pretty exclusive in itself. whites out the rest of the important message for me

Keep talking and have a cup of tea

The many fronts thing seems to be an artefact of the way things have gone over the last few years - Maybe it's to do with the information age and internet opening up our eyes to the many things that are going on, it's now easier for people to communicate, and to see what's going on?

How do we rally against the many fingers that seek to crush us all? We say NO. We stand against each of these fingers each times it tries to push us, and we stand firm. But each time, we say NO. Or No Thanks, if that suits the situation.

We keep communicating, because knowledge helps inform everyone, it helps us all to learn and to make our own choices.

If you've not got time to invest helping everyone you might want to, then at least look after those you know, and help those you meet. Even if that's just offering someone a cup of tea.

Poetry - "Rage"

I used to resent that angry voice
That shouting inside, that screaming noise
I told myself it was an imperfect flaw
A sign of weakness and one I abhorred
And it was a chore to silence that roar,
To lock the door to the rage at my core
But not anymore, no not anymore
I can no longer ignore my part in this war

For now I see with different eyes
The fire that burns and crackles inside
A new found respect for emotions dismissed
As ugly, as brutal, and with a clenched fist
I’ll embrace this rage I find within me
As a natural reaction to all that I see

I’ve seen a man howl after losing his son
To a meaningless war and a kid with a gun
I’ve seen a sick child and known that they’ll die
As the price of the medicine was too high
I’ve seen a man beaten and kicked where he stands
Just for falling in love with another man
And I’ve seen a woman tell a story of rape
At the hands of a man who made his escape
With a smile, as though what he’d done was okay
I’ve seen all these things and I see every day
These things that reduce me to frustrated tears
As the pleas of the poor fall on rich, deaf ears.

I’ve seen powerful people pretend that they care
While the hungry don’t eat and the wealthy don’t share
I’ve seen millionaires who run this nightmare
Shoot out their hot air and I’ve screamed “THAT’S NOT FAIR”
So yes, I’m angry, though I’m not consumed
If I was I’d already be halfway to doomed
I’m fierce but I’m focussed, chaotic but calm
For that father in mourning, for that love that caused harm
For that child that will die for the cost of a pill
And if that don’t make you angry then fuck knows what will.
